Ms. Minton,

In the April 9th “Fresh Voices” column you asked students four serious questions concerning God. I often read your column but never have I felt the desire to send a reply … until now.

“DO YOU BELIEVE IN GOD?”

Unlike many of the students you interviewed, I undoubtedly believe in a supreme being, not one of my own invention or some cosmic nothing lacking emotion, compassion, or love. No, I believe in a God who created this world and everything in it. A Father who yearns for a personal relationship with each one of us. A Lord who is, and was, and always will be; who though times change, he does not, though we stumble and fall, sin and turn away, his love remains the same. His love, a love so great our human minds can not imagine. A love so great he gave his only son, Jesus Christ, to die for our sins, so that we might live. Christ, though a perfect being, took our offenses on himself, and the punishment that came with them. He was whipped, beat, spit upon, forced to carry his own cross, mocked, cursed and beat again. Jesus Christ, both God and man, was taken, falsely accused, stripped, hung on a cross with spikes driven into his wrists and ankles; and as these horrors were bestowed upon him, this perfect man said “forgive them, for they know not what they do.” “Forgive them!”, after everything humanity did to God’s son, God himself? Through the pain, the agony, the sweat drops of blood? Christ looked at that crimson mud beneath his cross and he thought of me, he thought of today’s youth, and he thought of you Lynn Minton.

Yes, I believe in God. History proves him, geology, archaeology, and science all verify his existence. But more than all of these I believe in God, the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, because of my personal experiences. Jesus Christ has changed this life, given it meaning, provided a purpose, a reason to live, to breathe.

Thanks For Your Time,
