Smell the roses

“In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace.”
Ephesians 1:7

My Lesson 23 BSF [Bible Study Fellowship] Notes on Ephesians 1:7 say,

The word redemption implies that our former existence was slavery: slavery to “futility” (a meaningless existence called “the rat race” in our day)

Of course this struck a cord with me since I often think and write about meaningless living. Just getting by. Going through the motions, yet not truly living. Mediocrity.

The mention of a rat race reminded me of a short film I shared with you in January. It’s called Do Geese See God1. This film could very possibly drive a person crazy. It continues to loop through a maddening rat race. You think it will never end. But if you click at the right time and stop to smell the roses… Then Dr. Awkward is freed from his futile, heart pounding mission.
Stop to smell the roses. We’ve all heard the cliche countless times. Slow down, enjoy life… But is that really enough? Is that the cure for life’s futile rat race? Perhaps it means something else.

I just remembered, one name for Jesus is The Rose of Sharon. [Song of Solomon 2:1]

Eureka! Jesus is The Rose that rescues us from the rat race; from a life of futility.

  1. The film is no longer on Amazon.com so if the link I provided doesn’t work, please comment here. I downloaded two higher quality versions of it. I can send it to you. [back]

Amy is talking to herself again.
