Celebrating Discardia

The season of Discardia began on Thursday and lasts until October 3rd. What? You’ve never heard of the new Discardia holiday before? Yeh, me either. That is until I read: 43 Folders | Happy Discardia: Let something go

“Discardia is celebrated by getting rid of stuff and ideas you no longer need. It’s about letting go, abdicating from obligation and guilt, being true to the self you are now. Discardia is the time to get rid of things that no longer add value to your life, shed bad habits, let go of emotional baggage and generally lighten your load.” - Discardia: What is it?

Any holiday that promotes simplifying life and tossing stuff is a favorite holiday of mine. According to Prevention’s Clutter Type Quiz, I am a tosser.

We celebrated Discardia at our house today by having a “Free Sale.”

The kids saw two garage sales on our street. They thought that was a fabulous idea, so we made a big sign that said, “FREE SALE” and dragged tons of unwanted toys and stuff out onto the driveway. [I've never had a garage sale, I'm too lazy to price things. I'm also too lazy to drop stuff off at goodwill.]

Four year old Jeremiah drew pictures and handed them out to people. He yelled, “Everything is Free, Everything is Free!” As loud as he could. The first time someone took something my kids went crazy jumping and giggling. They explained all of the great features of each toy and were terribly disappointed when one little girl didn’t take Sarah’s stuffed kitty cat with her.

As soon as a ‘customer’ would leave, the kids would worry that we didn’t have enough stuff for ’sale.’ They would run back into the house and grab more unwanted toys or clothes.

This worked out well because it kept the kids busy and gave more people a chance to get stuff. If we had put it all out at once the first people may have taken everything.

I got rid of a ton of stuff. [I hate stuff.] And I met several of our neighbors. Fun Fun.

Jeremiah found a few more boxes of stuff to give away. He’s planning another free sale for next week. Maybe we should make lemonade too.
