I wasn’t fond of the Pentecostal questions… either I’m not as Pentecostal as I thought or the quiz-maker has confused us with a bunch of theologically clueless crazies… which well… I’m only 57% 64% crazy.

One of the quiz statements which we’re to agree or disagree on is, “Speaking in tongues is one of the most important parts of being saved.” While I know that’s one of the Pentecostal indicator questions… and I do value speaking in tongues… I can’t say it’s ‘one of the most important parts of being saved.’ Gracious. [erm... no offense to those who disagree.]

A few of the other questions are hard to answer, but overall it’s a fun quiz if you’re a geeky seminarian like myself… [who now has to read up on Karl Barth and Neo-Orthodoxy... and reexamine my views of the emergent church.]

Some of the questions are worded in such a way that you can’t accurately express your opinion… ah well it’s all for fun right?  [Yeh, it's all fun and games till someone gets burned at the stake as a heretic.]

1. Grammatical pet peeve
My children insist on saying “her” when they should say “she.” They started doing this when they couldn’t pronounce the “sh” sound… now they do it out of habit or as an orchestrated attempt to drive me crazy… I’m not quite sure.

2. Household pet peeve
Rubbermaid/Tupperware piled randomly in cabinets above my head, promising to rain down on me when I even think about putting leftovers in the fridge.

3. Arts & Entertainment pet peeve
I hate it when restaurants don’t list their beverage prices on the menu. They do this on purpose. They know you’ll order a drink anyway and pay whatever they feel like charging. Evil… pure evil. I’ll drink water, thank you very much.

4. Liturgical pet peeve
I’m A/G… I don’t think we even know how to pronounce liturgical.
Update: “Reverendmother” thinks I should share my favorite church or worship related pet peeve:
A. When speakers preach out of The Message and imply that it is actually THE Bible. [Previous Rant] P.S. This pet peeve tend to get me in trouble… because only about three people in the whole world seem to agree.
B. I’m peeved that we don’t say the word “Liturgical.” I love that word.

5. Wild card–pet peeve that doesn’t fit any of the above categories
Dishonesty By Default. If you neglect to tell the truth… you are lying. If you only tell part of the truth… you are lying. If you pick your words very carefully so that you’re ‘technically’ telling the truth… you are lying.

Oh my… I don’t fold laundry. I just close my eyes and hope it goes away. I pray each night that little laundry leprechauns will sneak into my apartment and put away all of the clothes… they never come. I don’t know why. I leave snacks… I’d pay cash… Why won’t they come? Why… Why…

Short Things? My first friday five has to be about short things? The word short haunts me like the word “fat” haunts some. It has bothered me a lot lately. Probably for three reasons: Joining the Army, moving into this apartment with ridiculously high cabinets, ceilings, light switches, and seeing my son stand next to the other 4 and 5 year olds at church.

Despite all of the inadequate feelings that the word “short” brings up today, I can definitely think of:

Five Noteworthy Short People In My Life:

1. My Grandpa
   He’s the one everyone else in this list blames for our lack of height. Grandpa had false teeth. He’d rattle them around and then watch as young children tried to do the same with their teeth… funny stuff… but it made your jaws hurt if you tried for too long… not that I would know that.
2. My Twin Sister Jami
   It’s true… my identical twin sister is short. I’m sure you’re surprised. However, she is only short in stature. She has rarely been short of love, compassion, creativity, humor, intelligence, faith, passion or life.
3. My Mom
   Once again, I’m sure you’re surprised… but my mom is short too. I’d blame her for my own height but I think she’d just blame grandpa. Shortness isn’t the only thing she’s passed on to me though. She invested into my life and passed on priceless faith and values.
4. My Five Year Old Son
   Jeremiah is such a little guy. He wears 3T jeans with a belt cinched extra tight. Children years younger than him tower above. He’s only small on the outside though. Inside, he is a giant of a man with dreams that will undoubtedly change the world.
5. My Three Year Old Daughter
   I may learn more from this little person than anyone else. Mostly she teaches me patience… she is after all three, and so very different than me. While her brother and I have very similar personalities, Sarah and I seem total opposites. She’s so…. girly and illogical. She’s just what I always needed. She has taught me that it’s OK to wear pink.

   Not wanting anything else but to just be with me, she crawls up in my lap asking me to hold her. She wants to be a mommy when she grows up. She dreams of little else and watches my every move, studying how to be a mommy. It’s scary really, knowing that this little person wants to be like me. Goodness, I don’t even want to be like me. But she’s watching. She’s always watching.

   Oh God, I need to be like you! Because she wants to be like me.

P.S. My attention span was a little short this morning… I don’t even think I answered the meme right…
