Word Of The Day
Yesterday, I wrote about flummery and warned of the return of the Word of the Day series.
This was a brief collection of “daily” posts written back in 2005. A post could be about anything, but it had to contain the Dictionary.com Word of the Day.
Since I’m recovering from a bad case of blogging burnout, I think I’ll resurrect the Word of the Day posts. Any objections?
My hectic class schedule has caused a bit of recidivism… I’m already posting the words a day behind.
Word of the day for October 24, 2007
recidivism \rih-SID-uh-viz-uhm\, noun:
A tendency to lapse into a previous condition or pattern of behavior; especially, a falling back or relapse into prior criminal habits.
I thoroughly enjoyed yesterday’s class… all 9 hours of it.
First we discussed how one of our own chaplains could provide for the needs of one of his Islamic soldiers. This wasn’t just an exercise, our brother is really out there dealing with a specific situation. Next, Rabbi Rita Sherwin of Springfield’s Temple Israel spoke to us about Reformed Judaism.
Josh brought some amazing red beans and rice for the entire class. We couldn’t wait for the dinner break. They smelled too good. So we ate that during a break and talked to the AG Chaplaincy Director, Chaplain Worthley.
The evening continued with lectures on the Moorish Science Temple of America, Nation of Islam, Rastafarians, and Santeria.
I don’t know if it was the amazing amount of caffeine rushing through my veins, or perhaps the fact that I’d been stuck in a chair for hours on end… but as the hours passed, all of the explanations of these religions with their foreign words, and unfamiliar practices… all seemed like flummery.
Flummery. That my friends, was the word of the day on Monday. Remember my word of the day series? It’s back.

OH! P.S. I also got an awesome chaplaincy scholarship yesterday. Praise God, I get to go to seminary AND feed my children.
After a nap and a brief pity party, I’m ready for a roborant cup of coffee and a little road trip.
Anyone remember my “Word of the Day” series? It’s back.

roborant \ROB-uh-ruhnt\
adjective:
1. Strengthening; restoring vigor.
noun:
1. A strengthening medicine; a tonic; a restorative.
In addition to the vocabulary lesson, the coffee, and the nap, I’m also listening to Brian Littrell’s “In Christ Alone” again, and again and again. And quoting Philippians 4:8. Which is easier to quote if you remember the phrase “True Horses Just Puke Lovely.” Yep, I learned that in Missionettes 17 or 18 years ago.
I talked Joel into cooking fried chicken last night. While cooking our delicious dinner, Joel accidentally turned the wrong burner on high heat. Cooking oil turned black and smoke rose through the air. The scent permeated my clothes… and soul.
This morning, I picked up the jeans I wore last night. They smelled like The Lazy Susan. It hurts my heart. It turns my stomach.
Will there ever be a time when the phrase, “Comfort Food” doesn’t make me uncomfortable? When fried chicken doesn’t make my head spin with worry?
My sister and daughter keep talking to me. I better put an end to this querulous post.

Update: Oooh Ooh, I came up with the right word. It just happens to be the word of the day.

Is it Saturday yet? Autumn yet? March 2006 yet?
Today is a difficult day. So many difficulties that I should not expound upon. [Never know who reads this blog, this open letter to the world.] This isn’t merely an irritating bagatelle. My mind is full of serious issues, trials, confusions. Broken Church, Unpaid Bills, Sick Grandma, Dead Grandpa, Challenging Children, Financial Gambles that boggle the mind. So much to do, so little done. Piled dishes, laundry, papers, worries.
I should not worry. God is bigger. Bigger than a messy house, late fees, risky restaurant, aching heart, power infected people. Bigger even than a growing coffee addiction accompanied by a bad attitude and a lack of sleep.
P.S. Did you know that my husband, busy as he is, reads my blog every day? Isn’t that nice? I wish he would blog. Joel I Miss You.
Another Note: It’s not as bad as I thought it was. It rarely is.

Seems I’m behind on the word of the day project again.
Let me quote the excuse I gave last Monday, “I. Am. Tired.”
I’m unable to post in complete sentences… How can I possibly fit tryst, pari passu, and enmity into my posts…
The enmity I hold towards this daily vocabulary tryst increases pari passu with my level of exhaustion.
Sorry folks, that’s all I’ve got in me. Perhaps my creative and intelligent readers can write something better? Please do so in the comment section. And while you’re commenting, let me know if you think I should admit defeat and stop doing these silly word of the day things.
